How did you first get connected with the AS Child Development Lab (ASCDL)?
I got connected with ASCDL through one of my courses, CHLD 392-Child Development Practicum. During the course, I did an internship in the toddler classroom, and after the internship, I was offered a position as a student staff.

How would you describe your role as the (student staff) with ASCDL?
My role as the student staff with the ASCDL in the toddler classroom is to:

  • Engage with children and support classroom activities
  • Facilitate toddlers optimal physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development
  • Apply knowledge to support peer relationships
  • Complete weekly observation notes
  • Participate in staff meetings

What does working at the ASCDL do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
Personally, working in the toddler classroom has given me more knowledge, experience, and has helped me to build relationships among children and teachers. Professionally my experience has prepared me in the field of child development, and helped me build the skills and techniques that I need when I will be working with children in the near future.

Academically, some of the things that I have learned are solving conflicts between two children, building positive relationships with new children in the classroom, and using choice of words in order to encourage the children.

What do YOU hope to bring to the table in your role as the (student staff)?
I hope to encourage other students who volunteer in the ASCDL to take the role as a new student staff as the old ones graduate. I will do my best to become a role model, a big sister, and a friend to the students under my care. I hope that my presence in the ASCDL will make the environment welcoming.

What are your career plans and how does your job with the Associated Students better prepare you for that path?
My career plan is to become a Childcare Toddler Teacher. The job at the ASCDL has prepared me for a professional job in Child Development. I have built confidence and gained valuable experiences working with children. I know that the Associated Students has given me what I need to be successful in the future.
