Program Position: Lead Student Prep Cook
How did you first get connected with AS Dining Services?
My friend was going to open interviews for AS Dining and asked if I wanted to go. I applied on-line first and then showed up to the open interview with zero food experience. They hired me on the spot!
How would you describe your current position with AS Dining Services?
Initially I worked about 15 hours a week in the Taqueria. I became the supreme burrito maker! Then I transferred to AS Catering for a while, and then switched back to the Marketplace where I’ve been a prep cook. I’m currently the lead student. I work 20 hours a week and supervise about 15-20 students. I like being back in the kitchen rather than on the line. I’m in charge of Top Chef and Local Lunches. I oversee all the meals served in those areas. I often fill in where needed. I’m a floater. For large events, I’ll help catering with the hot food.
What does working in AS Dining Services do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
I like being social with everyone working in the kitchen. I like building a team and being a leader. I’m learning to work with diverse people in close quarters. This experience has made me more open to people and able to connect with them on many different levels.
What do YOU bring to the table in your position as a lead student in the Marketplace?
I come into work with a good attitude and clear mind to set the tone for others. A bad attitude can affect your work and how you relate to customers. I’ve gained a lot of experience so I’m a “jack of all trades” in the Marketplace. I’m good at adapting to changing situations. I stay grounded in hectic situations. Part of my job is training new students, so I try to set a good example through my leadership.
What are your career plans and how does your job with the Associated Students better prepare you for that path?
I’m taking some HR classes now and I think I’m interested in going into that field. My Psychology degree would help me in dealing with people in an HR capacity. Plus, I can apply all the skills I’m learning in this job anywhere.
