Program Position: Compost Education Coordinator, AS Sustainability

How did you first get connected with AS Sustainability?
I have been involved with the AS since my first semester freshman year. I have always loved volunteering and found that the AS was a great resource. I volunteered with Cats in the Community and for the last two years was lucky enough to open up the Compost Display Area for volunteers to come and get their hands dirty. I found my niche in AS Sustainability and this will be my fifth semester working with the compost program.

How would you describe your current role with AS Sustainability?
I work as the Compost Coordinator at the Compost Display Area on the Chico State campus. I have the opportunity and privilege to reach out to students and community members about the importance of composting and gardening. I do this through class talks, Saturday workshops, and by offering interns units to work at the garden. Composting is something that everyone can do in their own homes that will reduce and reuse our organic waste!

What does working for AS Sustainability do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
Personally, the compost display area provides me with an awesome outdoor office. It is a place where I go to be creative by working with my hands and the soil. Each new season brings exciting opportunities to plant something new. The feeling of consuming organic food that you have grown yourself is greatly satisfying. I constantly feel like I am growing in myself as I nurture and grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Professionally, I am gaining management skills by running an intern team, public speaking skills though workshops, and organizational skills.

What do YOU bring to the table in your role with AS Sustainability?
I have a very energetic, upbeat personality. I come to the garden every day with a great attitude (even on compost turning Mondays)! I hope to inspire my interns to make the garden their own by encouraging good ideas and providing the means to complete projects. I learn from my team as much as they learn from me.  I also am completing a degree in biology, with a focus in Ecology. I have, in so many situations, been able to use and apply my knowledge in workshops and in gardening.
