Louie Gonzalez

Major:  Studio Art
Hometown:  Orland, CA
Program Position: Excel Group Leader | CAVE

As a freshman, Louie had a friend on CAVE staff who urged him to check out the volunteer opportunities available. Coming from a rich volunteer back ground which focused on mentoring, it didn’t take much convincing. Louie signed up to volunteer with CAVE’s Excel Program at the Chico Boys & Girls Club where he helped facilitate recreational activities for the kids. “I’m the only art major at CAVE, so I spent a lot of time at the Boys & Girls Club coloring with the kids.” In fact, Louie said his volunteer work at Excel has influenced him to consider teaching art as a career. “I had great art teachers. I want to spark something in a child – to inspire them because you can express so much through art.”

After a semester as a volunteer, Louie signed on as a group leader where he recruited and screened volunteers for program placement. “We mentor the volunteers and act as liaisons between the volunteers and the club plus we spend 2-3 hours each week at the site.”

Louie also volunteered through Freshmen Leadership Opportunity whose members participated in the National Day of Service. A single day’s effort including a creek clean-up, a canned food drive and a Children’s Park clean-up. Just recently he volunteered to help interview new applicants for this year’s FLO program. His involvement with both CAVE and FLO made him a natural volunteer facilitator for the LeadCat program, a freshmen leadership boot camp.

In Louie’s words:
“I volunteer because it makes me feel better. I want to give back to the community with my spare time. I don’t hesitate to help out above and beyond.”
