Program Position/Job Title: Information Technology Student Assistant
If you believe, you can achieve.
How did you first get connected with AS Information Technology (AS IT)?
As a Computer Science major, I learn a lot of software but rarely any hardware. To challenge myself when I was looking for a job last spring semester, I wanted to find one where I could learn some hardware skills. I preferred a job on campus so I decided to search on the AS website and came across this position that fit exactly what I was looking for as a student job.
How would you describe your role as an assistant for AS IT?
I would describe my role for AS as a troubleshooter because our goal in AS IT is to help everyone with their problems, especially the technical ones. Whether someone needs a new website, a fix for a broken printer, or a software update on their computer, we’re here to help fix that.
What does working for AS IT do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
On a professional level, my job has taught me how to work with hardware that I didn’t know much about before I started. Being knowledgeable about hardware and software will definitely help me stand out when applying to future jobs. On an academic level, this job has made it simple to schedule my time around my classes, which is hard to find nowadays. On a personal level, I have gotten to meet great people who are my bosses and coworkers.
What do YOU bring to the table in your role as an AS IT assistant?
My background is in technology, so I’m able to problem solve pretty much anything I set my mind to. If I don’t already know how to do it, I do a Google search to find the answer.
What are your career plans and how does your role with the Associated Students better prepare you for that path?
This summer I will be interning as a web and mobile applications developer for a company called Intuitive Surgical who specializes in making robots that assist in surgery. If my managers there like my internship work, then there is possibility for a full time position. I like working at places where I am able to help people. Working for AS IT and being able to help people has definitely reinforced that feeling, and working for a company that creates life-saving tools definitely seems like a good step into my career!
