You gotta nourish to flourish!
How did you first get connected with Adventure Outings (AO)?
My first semester at Chico State I signed up for AO’s Intro to Whitewater Kayaking. That trip was the steppingstone into my involvement with AO. I have since been an assistant leader, office staff, Wildcat Wilderness Orientation manager, mentor, and trip leader.
How would you describe your role as a Trip Leader for AO?
I would describe it as challenging but extremely rewarding. A Trip Leader for AO has a number of responsibilities to complete before their trip heads out. Some of those tasks include planning the trip schedule and securing necessary permits, orienting trip participants, gear preparation, vehicle inspections, and as always, SAFETY FIRST considerations. All the hard work is worth it when your job is to guide fellow Wildcats on memorable adventures.
What does working for the AO do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
Working for AO has given me many opportunities to develop myself in all those areas. It has taught me the valuable lessons of communication, honesty, and business. Being a part of AO has helped me meet new people, become closer with my peers and professors, and keeps me accountable for my academics.
What do YOU bring to the table in your role as a Trip Leader?
I bring patience and understanding. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, people need help completing a task, and mistakes are made. I like to approach every situation as a chance to help or lend an ear. We all try our best, so it is important to be supportive and encouraging, always! I enjoy being a person others feel comfortable approaching for anything they need.
What are your career plans and how does your role with the Associated Students better prepare you for that path?
My career plans are never to settle for anything that doesn’t fill my day with joy. The AS has allowed me the opportunity to work in a field I love and that has brought me so much happiness. It taught me that there is a job out there that I can go to each morning feeling stoked and where I can thrive as an individual. The AS also gave me the chance to develop interview skills that I am confident will help me land my dream job, whatever that happens to be.
