Maggie & Marsha Award Nominations (Free)
2017 Nominations Due: Friday, April 14th by 5:00pm (to BMU 004 or by email) | Private Awards Ceremony: Sunday, May 7th at the Women’s Club
Every spring, the AS Gender & Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC) hosts the Maggie and Milk Awards Ceremony that celebrates the Feminist, LGBTQ+, and allied community’s activist efforts. This year, 2017, the GSEC has renamed the event to the Maggie & Marsha Awards and have added several new awards under names that honor the legacy of more erased activists in LGBTQ+ and Women’s history.
Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to submit nominations honoring a local activist that deserves to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Women’s and LGBTQ+ movements.
Nominations are available in the following categories:
For an outstanding woman activist for feminist issues:
- Maggie Pattison Award
- Kimberlé Crenshaw Award
- Angela Davis Award
For an outstanding LGBTQ+ identified activist:
- Marsha P. Johnson Award
- Bayard Rustin Award
- Harvey Milk Award
For a faculty member who is working to better the lives of the people on this campus community in the spirit of feminist and/or queer activism:
- Carol Burr Award
The Maggie Awards originated in 1994, but the Milk Awards were incorporated into the ceremony in 2011 to honor the expansion of the GSEC. The Maggie Awards were named after Maggie Pattison, who was the Associated Students’ Government office manager for 23 years. The Milk Awards honor Harvey Milk, a past city supervisor of San Francisco and the first openly gay officer in the city’s history.
