Lia Van Egmond
Major: Agriculture with an option in Education
Hometown: Galt, CA
Program Position: Front Desk Assistant | Government Affairs
How did you first get connected with Government Affairs?
I got connected with Government Affairs through friends I met here at Chico State. A couple friends worked in the office, and I would go visit them during office hours and started asking questions about what each person did. When a friend posted the job opening on-line, I was interested right away, interviewed and was hired on!
How would you describe your role as the Front Desk Assistant for Government Affairs?
The Front Desk Assistant’s primary concern is customer service. Students have the right to ask questions about our campus and get involved as much as possible, and there are great opportunities and information we can give to them. We also assist officers with any tasks they ask us to help with including council and committee work. Another primary job the Front Desk Assistants work on is Revenue Sharing for recognized clubs on campus. If you have any questions, come find us in BMU 220!
What does working for Government Affairs do for you personally, professionally, or academically?
Working in the Government Affairs Office has been such an eye opening experience to me. The people I have the pleasure of meeting around our campus have showed me how unique our campus is. Personally, the relationships I have created with my colleagues, superiors and fellow students have encouraged me to be my best self and enjoy life to the fullest. Professionally, I have discovered my strengths and weaknesses in the work place, and my job has allowed me to build on these strengths and improve my weaknesses through constant practice and constructive criticism. Academically, I have found that I manage my time better with fewer available hours in my day. I am able to take more pride in my academics because I see the hard work that goes into our University and just how much of a privilege it is to attend Chico State.
What do YOU bring to the table in your role as Front Desk Assistant at Government Affairs?
I think I bring organization and a genuinely positive attitude to Government Affairs. I strive to keep our office organized because I believe this relieves unneeded stress in the office space. A genuine happiness for what we do shows through in my work, and allows me to help others who have questions or need any type of assistance because I love what I do.
What are your career plans and how does your job with the Associated Students better prepare you for that path?
I am still a bit unsure what my future holds, but I know I love working with others and I have a real passion for the agriculture industry. Working for Associated Students has given me the ability to improve my customer service skills while working closely with others who may or may not have the same strengths or weaknesses as me. This is a huge benefit to me no matter what I decide to do in my life. I have really found a love for publicity as well and hope to use the skills I have developed working in Government Affairs to work in the community to help tackle the issue of agricultural literacy.
