Volunteers work one-on-one with children who need extra help in the classroom. Volunteers act as positive role models and mentor youth who are English Language learners or have learning challenges. Volunteers offer support, companionship, and understanding. A special emphasis is placed on building self-esteem and cultural awareness, as well as stressing the importance of education.
When the Program Meets
During school hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Specific times are coordinated with the classroom teacher’s needs and volunteer’s schedule.
Chico Unified School District classrooms vary from a short walk to a five mile drive from campus.
Many university students are able to relate to the children involved in this program. Volunteers are given an opportunity to meet children from different cultures, understand children on a more personal level, and be a positive influence in their lives.
