What does it mean to be a Civically Engaged University?

The addition of Civic Engagement to Chico State’s Strategic Priorities invites us to imagine together what it means to be an engaged institution. Given the current social and political challenges of our time, we need to act collectively to re-envision what role our campus plays in fostering civic/community engagement.

Kristin is passionate about student civic outcomes and the role of higher education in addressing community issues. She works with students, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders to help create positive engagement.
Skills for High Performance Leaders
Monday, October 11th from 4-6 pm in BMU 203
In this interactive session, Glen uses real life examples to highlight the skills that effective leaders employ. These include planning, collaborating, thinking critically, and executing.
Recruiting and Training Manager, California State Auditor
Glen has been with the California State Auditor’s Office for the past 17 years. His responsibilities include developing and implementing a training program, hiring new employees, and overseeing the office’s mentor programs. Glen also serves as the President of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
Interviewing: What to Ask and What to Say
Wednesday, October 25th from 4-5 pm in BMU 220G
Interviewing is a two way process – a company’s chance to see if you are the right person to hire and your chance to learn if the company’s culture aligns with your values. In this career conversation, you will learn practical, strategic ways to handle the interviewing process from beginning to end. Topics covered include researching the organization, making a good impression, answering difficult questions, and how to follow up after the interview. You will also learn what questions to ask to understand a company’s culture and approach to diversity and inclusion.

Women Rising in the Workplace
Wednesday, October 25th from 6:30-8 pm in BMU 203
This workshop will empower women to challenge the status-quo and become tomorrow’s leaders in the workforce. Participants will learn how to develop their personal brand and identity, portray self-confidence, and connect with mentors and sponsors as they climb the corporate ladder.
Field Claims Representative II for Federated Insurance
Kirsten graduated from Chico State in 2012 with a BS in Business Administration and minor in Management. At Federated, she works directly with clients to complete on-scene investigations and resolve litigated disputes.
The Soundtrack of My Leadership
Wednesday, November 8th from 4 – 6 pm in BMU 203
Leadership, like music, can be found everywhere. They both have the ability to influence how we think, fell, and interact with each other. Join us as we look at how the process of defining and refining our leadership skills is as varied as the music we listen to.

Malcolm has worked within Student Life and Leadership at Chico State for 6 years and has spoken at numerous universities about developing a leadership identity. He focuses on cultural leadership and organizational development.
