Shelby Thomas

Major:  Recreation Administration
Hometown:  Pine Mountain Club, CA
Class:  Sophomore
Program Position: Facilitator | FLO

When Shelby came to Chico State, she already had a home town friend here who offered her a great piece of advice for getting involved. She said, “Join FLO!” Freshman Leadership Opportunity provides new students with exposure to the Associated Students and its programs. It introduces students to AS staff and showcases the myriad opportunities for involvement at all levels.

Shelby eagerly followed her friend’s advice and loved her year in FLO. She shadowed a FLO facilitator and decided she wanted to become one. “It was the next logical step for my leadership development, and I really wanted to share all my positive experiences with new freshmen.” Shelby had great role models in the program and is striving to be one herself to a new group of FLO participants.

Shelby’s volunteering extends far beyond FLO. She participated in two weekend immersion programs with CAVE and also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. “It is so rewarding to work side by side with a family to help build their new home.” She is also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta whose national philanthropy is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She recently participated in their annual fund raiser for JDRF, Walk With a Purpose.

As a recreation major, Shelby recently volunteered with the Downtown Chico Business Association at the annual Taste of Chico event, spent this past summer as an aquatics counselor for the Camp Adventure Youth Services Program in Japan, and is currently serving on the AS Environmental Affairs Council.

In Shelby’s words:
“FLO fosters personal growth, is a great way to volunteer, and allows you to put your stamp on Chico State. Volunteering in general is a great way to meet new people, gain new experiences, and give back to those in need.”
