The California State Student Association (CSSA) held a virtual meeting on November 16th, covering a wide range of issues affecting students across the CSU system. Here's a breakdown of what CSSA is and what topics were discussed this past weekend.

CSSA is the governing body representing all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the California State University (CSU) system. It serves as a platform for students to advocate for their interests and concerns on a system-wide level. CSSA works closely with the CSU Chancellor's Office and the Board of Trustees to ensure that student voices are heard and considered in decision-making processes.

The AS President and Commissioner of Legislative Affairs attend these meetings to represent California State University, Chico. In the event they cannot, the Commissioner of Student Engagement and Advocacy attends as proxy.

Budget Cuts & Financials:

The CSU faces a potential 7.95% budget cut, amounting to a staggering $397 million. Additionally, promised state funding through the CSU Compact is also at risk, jeopardizing another $252.3 million. These cuts could lead to larger class sizes, reduced staff, fewer course offerings, and diminished student services. The California State Student Association is actively advocating to protect CSU budgets and restore CSU Compact funding. They are working with legislators and the Chancellor's office to ensure continued investment in your education.

Changes in CSU Policies:

Several CSU policies are undergoing changes, creating uncertainty:

  • Internal Affairs Committee: The committee is reviewing its membership policies and attendance requirements to ensure efficient operation and student representation.
  • Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) Policies: These policies govern student expression on campus. The CSU implemented temporary TPM policies due to a state mandate, but CSSA pushed for changes to ensure freedom of expression. While some revisions were made, concerns remain.
  • Title IX/DHR Implementations: These regulations address sexual harassment and discrimination on campus. There's a possibility that incoming administrations could repeal these regulations, potentially impacting student safety and support.

Get Involved with Your Education:

Stay informed about these issues by following CSSA updates and attending campus meetings. CSSA provides resources and opportunities for students to advocate for themselves. You can also participate in initiatives like the Student Survey on Strategic Improvements in the CSU (SOVASurvey) to shape the future of the system. Additionally, take time to review the Strategic Planning Process by SOVA for a more in depth description of initiatives taking place systemwide. Together, we can ensure a strong and vibrant CSU system that prioritizes student success. Stay connected with CSSA and use your voice to advocate for the education you deserve.
