Hi, I’m Adin White, and I’m the new AS Commissioner of Sustainability Affairs at Chico State. I grew up in Chico and it’s been my dream since I was a kid to be a Chico State student. Now that I’m here, I’m honored to serve my fellow students as Sustainability Commissioner. In my position, I plan to promote sustainability-related events both on and off campus. I want to help engender student-led sustainability organizing, and foster communication between groups within our community who are already doing amazing work to create a greener Chico. I’m committed to advancing environmental education, climate awareness, energy efficiency, and zero-waste initiatives.I’m a dedicated student of the human condition and an avid reader of philosophy, psychology, and cultural studies. I believe we are all intimately entangled with our environments to such a degree that we become indistinguishable from it and from each other. That’s why I believe it’s important that we all work together to protect the biosphere and preserve it. I think the enduring beauty of Chico State’s campus is a testament to our community’s dedication to sustainable practices. Chico is situated in an incredibly vulnerable county, one that I have seen ravaged by increasingly devastating environmental catastrophes for as long as I’ve been alive. These disasters, both loud and quiet, are symptomatic of larger global trends that affect vulnerable communities and populations first. It continues to be possible for some of us to imagine ourselves insulated from the consequences of our poor stewardship of the biosphere. The failure of our cultural institutions to engender an appropriate sense of urgency and responsibility for, for example, the threat of rapid global aquifer depletion and changing climates must be remedied by the creation and promotion of our own systems of education and action. To fulfil this role is my goal as AS Commissioner of Sustainability Affairs at Chico State. When I’m not at school I like to bike around Chico with my friends, run, and read. I also like to make music, draw, and (rarely) paint. I’m an active member and officer in many on-campus clubs and organizations, and am a board member of SBO, a nonprofit organization that provides support to children in Haiti founded and run by Jean Chrislot Michaud, a recent Chico State alumni. Last year I served as the president of the Chico Anthropological Society and am now involved in creating a peer-mentoring program within the department with the help of the board of the club, Cheryl Lugo, and Valantina Rashoo. I am currently the vice president of the Adelante Club, an organization dedicated to supporting low income and latine students interested in or curious about graduate school. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with SWANASA, a student-led organization on campus that works to promote awareness and understanding of Southwest Asian and North African people and cultures. I’m also working with Haseeb Rameen, the founder of Chico State’s AIME chapter, to start a UNICEF chapter on campus in the fall. I work as a cultural resource technician for SWCA Environmental Consultants, where I do archaeological excavations and land survey. I often spend my summers in my ancestral home of Ireland, excavating a medieval Irish village and Anglo-Norman castle in Connacht. In 2022 I was made an official ambassador for County Roscommon, Ireland. I’ll be graduating in 2025 in the Spring.
I bring forward my knowledge, skills, and experience to create a substantial and positive impact on our university’s commitment to sustainability through the role of Commissioner of Sustainability Affairs
