As the anniversary of June 19 or “Juneteenth” approaches, it is a good time to pause and celebrate the importance of the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States over 150 years ago.

The Associated Students (AS) will observe Juneteenth on Monday, June 20, the second year since the (AS) Board of Directors unanimously voted to include Juneteenth as an annual paid holiday for its staff and became the first auxiliary in the CSU system to do so. The AS is dedicated to advancing policies and practices that strengthen our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. Observing Juneteenth as a recognized holiday further strengthens our commitment to ensure the history of the Black community is recognized.

Looking to deepen your knowledge of the history of Juneteenth or to celebrate the holiday with online events? The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture website offers a variety of rich content for everyone.

While the AS observes Juneteenth to honor the history of the Black Community in the United States, all facilities and operations, including the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center, and all Dining Services locations will be closed.
